Ritual in transfigured time

I like weird movies. This Maya Deren experimental film fuses dream logic with mythology:

Deren transforms the interior of a house into a double door dream space where humanity weaves its own fate. Older spinner prepares the life to come and young lady, Mary, must return to Earth and pass through the lives of others wearing the garments of her initiation. She is transfigured.

Note the Guardian of the Threshold at the doorway.

The old spinner’s weaving now appears as the myriad relationships of the living.

Young lady must establish new relationship with the classical spirit. The Greeks’ understanding of the life force is released from the sculpture creating a cataclysmic release of energy that frightens the heroine and drives her back to her destiny weaving state where she returns to the waters of the unconscious becoming a bearer of the force received through her initiation.

Think of Hamlet’s fascination as he watches the old actor enact the scene of Priam’s slaughter. Hamlet confronts the Greek classical human consciousness, a consciousness that is foreign to him and necessary  to spur  his further evolution.
