Schubert’s Der Erlkonig-2 Fantastic Performances

Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter with the Claudio Abbado conducting the Chamber Orchestra of Europe prove that transcriptions can work. A women singing the conversation between a boy and his father works quite. After all, story tellers relate the speeches of different characters without necessarily matching up physically with the fictional speakers. This is well orchestrated (by Hector Berlioz!) and von Otter has the voice to match the orchestra’s power.

Von Otter and Abbado recorded an entire album of Schubert lieder.
